It all began in the 1980s, on the initiative of Sylvain BÈGUE, a native from La Nouvelle.
A true precursor in tourism, he was at the time the first resident of the Cirque to welcome hikers in his
home to provide them meals, then he arranged his house to also accommodate them.
Facing growing demand, he then undertook the construction of his own cottage.
At the time, there was very few helicopters to supply inhabitants and at unaffordable prices. Sylvain,
through his perseverance and courage, went back and forth by foot from the Col des Boeufs to La
Nouvelle in order to carry on man's back the equipment necessary for its construction.
Years went by, Sylvain's children grew ? up and became old enough to take over.
Sylvain decided to hand over to his son Jean-Yves, who took this project very seriously and decided to
leave Réunion to train in metropolitan France.
He forged his cooking experience in large establishments such as the Casino de Deauville and went
back to his native island, diploma in his pocket and his partner Marion from Normandy.
Jean-Yves and Marion embarked on a true life project and devoted themselves, during nearly five years,
to the complete renovation of the building.
They thus gave life to the first touristic hiking lodge of the hamlet, which reopened its doors in 2010,
called "Le Tamaréo" in reference to the endemic tree of the Cirque "Le Tamarin des hauts ".
